They’re interested in crowd sourcing ideas for bringing innovation to their business to consumer strategy. Tetenal wants to hear from the film community. Using these at-home products and a simplified way for mixing chemicals, Tetenal may be positioned in quickly bringing back products once thought were no longer needed. With successful kickstarters for at-home developing, like LAB-BOX, there is a stronger market for at-home developing. As Tetenal is thinking of new ideas, they’ve realized this product could possibly return in a new market: home developing. As the popularity of digital cameras quickly replaced the need for film cameras, these tablets were no longer needed and quickly forgotten. For example, in the days where the press needed to get negatives to the news outlets quickly, they would use a portable ‘press kit’ to quickly develop the film. They have many recipes for developing processes long-forgotten that could fit today’s market. Many forget, Tetenal has been in the photochemical business for 170 years. Nico’s Photography Show covering the news in October 2018. They are looking into expanding their direct to consumer marketing model, thus opening up the opportunity in delivering new ideas and resurrecting some old ideas. This is changing and Tetenal has an ace up their sleeve. Traditionally, Tetenal’s marketing model was B2B (Business to Business), by converting raw materials into chemicals which were sold to large photo businesses. What is the result? Similar to a bankruptcy, Tetenal’s management is going through a restructuring process and looking for new ways to generate revenue. It’s very risky with very little guarantee the strategy is successful for both Tetenal and the banks. Financial institutions are more reluctant to act in these situations and getting the funds are difficult. In the past, when these situations occurred, businesses would get emergency loans to pay back once their inventory sold. Like a bad date, Tetenal was dumped with a dinner tab they couldn’t pay. How the heck did this happen? Well, unfortunately suppliers were unable to deliver on their goods in a timely manner and their business customers pulled their orders. What does this mean? It’s not quite a bankruptcy however they are in a state where they do not have the cashflow to pay the bills. Marwan has been in direct contact with Tetenal and the information he provided in the interview is direct from Tetenal and not hearsay. Admittedly, I was rather ignorant of the matter and he filled me in. Our previous guest, Marwan, from PhotoKlassik International reached out to me asking if I knew anything about the news from Tetenal. Their collapse could potentially decimate film photography industry. We learn the film resurgence is real however, it is still in a very fragile state. Due to some bad business practices from their suppliers, Tetenal is in a state of insolvency. The very day after Photokina, Tetenal Germany announced they’re in financial turmoil. Three or four minutes with no light is more than enough time to load a reel after a bit of practice, I recommend. This is big news in coming from Hamburg Germany, however it has not made a big splash in the US and has flown under our radar. you will also need alight tight closet which will only be needed short times, I small bathroom is better than the closet if avoids any remarks about what your coming out of when finished and can be made more humid which will help with the biggest fight you have which is dust, and there is nothing like a clothes closet to be loaded with lint hair dust old beer and diapers and womens undies and so on, just make sure you teen aged childred have a another bathroom to do the endless grooming while your processing you can more than likely do this for less than fifty bucks/. The cost of setting up to process black and white film is very small but to set up for printint you will need an enlarger safe lights print washers and developing trays and ligh tighe or very close to light tight place to do it that will not irritate your spouse or what ever too much.įor only negative processing you will need a film tank in your case a tank for 120 size film and a reel for the film timer cloths pins and beaker and a dependable thermometery. Now days most of us like processing our negs then scanning them with what ever our preferred method is, instead of makeing silver base prints. provided you still have dark room equipment I send them out for color but i process my own black and white its simple fun and gives you way more control over your iso ratings for various emulsions you might use, color processing is tedious and does not lend itself to much manipulation, and while the chemical kits save you a few dollars its not nearly as much a savings as doing your own black and white is.
